Most start-ups don't fail because of the idea. They fail because of the numbers.
The first three years decide the next ten
Wrong structure. No management accounts. Late VAT registration. Scrappy bookkeeping. Each one is fixable in year one and a nightmare by year three.
Growth without numbers is just luck. The businesses that scale are the ones that built the numbers in from the start. The businesses that don't are the ones that didn't.

Why a start-up and growth specialist matters
EIS and SEIS for investor-backed start-ups. R&D tax credits in early years when cashflow matters most. EMI share option schemes for the first key hires. The decision to register for VAT voluntarily before turnover requires it. Choosing the right accounting software for the next 5 years, not just the next 5 months.
These are the decisions that shape the business. Get them right and growth compounds. Get them wrong and you spend year three undoing what should have been done in year one.

Common Questions
Sole trader or limited company?
Below £30k profit, sole trader is often simpler with similar tax. Above that, limited company tends to win on tax. If you're raising investment, limited is essentially required. If you're protecting personal assets, limited matters more.
When do I need to VAT-register?
When taxable turnover exceeds £90,000 in a rolling 12-month period. Sometimes voluntary registration earlier makes sense (mainly if your customers are VAT-registered businesses).
When should I hire my first employee?
When the work you'd have them do generates more value than the cost of having them. We'll help model the affordability based on your numbers and forecast.
How do I structure for investment?
Limited company, with a clean cap table, EIS/SEIS pre-approval where possible, and a share structure that supports future rounds. We work alongside your lawyer to get this right.
Can I claim R&D as a start-up?
Yes, and it's often particularly valuable for early-stage businesses with losses. R&D credits can be surrendered for cash from HMRC. We'll assess, document, and submit.
