If you've ever filed a return at 11pm on 31 January, you'll know the cost of leaving it late.

Self assessment is more than just filing the return

The return is the easy bit. The hard bit is knowing what counts as a deductible expense, when to claim, what to include, what to leave out.

The wrong advice on a return can cost you more than the tax itself. The right advice through the year can save you a great deal more.

Every client is different, so we don’t force businesses into one-size-fits-all packages.

We’ll discuss what support you need, agree the scope of work upfront, and provide a clear proposal before we start.

Many clients choose to spread the cost through monthly payments, helping them budget for their accountancy support throughout the year.

Why SD Accountancy

Based across Oxfordshire and Essex. A small team. One standard of work. You meet the accountant doing your books. You always speak to them directly. You never get bounced to a help desk or a rotating cast of juniors.

That's how Samuel set up the firm in 2024 and that's how we still work as we grow.

Common Questions

  • When's the deadline?

31 January following the end of the tax year (5 April). Paper returns are 31 October. Late filing is £100 minimum, rising fast.

  • Do I have to do a return if I'm a director?

Usually yes, if you take dividends or have other income. HMRC will typically issue a notice. If you're unsure, ask us and we'll check.

  • What expenses can I claim as a sole trader?

Anything wholly and exclusively for the business. The list varies by trade, which is why we ask about your specific work rather than handing over a generic checklist.

  • Can you handle landlord returns?

Yes, including Section 24 mortgage interest restrictions, allowable expenses, finance cost calculations, and CGT on disposal. Landlord work is one of our specialisms.

  • What if I'm late filing?

We can still file. Penalties apply but we'll handle the appeal where there's a reasonable excuse. The sooner you let us know, the cheaper it is.
